How To Not Dress Frumpy: 5 Tips You Won’t Want To Miss

Worried about dressing frumpy? Fear no more! Today you’re going to learn Claudine Broussard’s top 5 tips on how to not dress frumpy.

As a teen, I wanted to look cute, but I wasn’t sure how to do that and still dress modestly. Some of my outfits had a serious frump factor!

However, over the years, I was inspired by modest fashion bloggers and other Christian women who modeled modest fashion and how to not dress frumpy.

And I learned some simple tips to keep my wardrobe game on point. Like Cleo Madison, I believe that a Christian girl’s wardrobe doesn’t have to shout “frumpy” or old lady.

With a little time and effort, we can honor God with our wardrobes.

How To Not Dress Frumpy Tip #1 Wear Clothes That Fit & Flatter

    properly fitted dress

What comes to mind when you think “frumpy”? Personally, I picture out-of-date garments that are baggy and ill-fitting.

It could be an A-line skirt that hits mid-calf and makes your calves look huge. Or it might be a faded t-shirt that’s two sizes too big.

Somehow, I can’t picture the Old Testament priests wearing garments that didn’t fit them. Rather, I think each garment was tailored to fit the individual priest.

That way, the garments would honor God and reflect His excellence.

To be honest, it’s hard to find a balance between baggy clothes and clothes that are too tight. But I try to stick to this rule of thumb:

“Your dresses should be tight enough to show you’re a woman and loose enough to show you’re a lady.” Edith Head

Here are some tips for finding properly fitting clothes.

    • Research what types of garments/colors/fabrics will work for your body type. Wear them! Reachel Bagley does an excellent job of teaching women how to do this.
    • For knee-length skirts and dresses, choose hems that hit right below the knee.
    • For maxi skirts and dresses, choose hems that actually hit the narrowest part of your ankle.
    • Ensure that the shoulder seams on shirts line up with your shoulders.
    • Never buy a long-sleeved shirt with sleeves that are too short.
    • If you’re a tall girl (5’7” and up), size up in skirts so that the skirt hangs properly. Also try tall sizes in major brands.
    • Choose clothes that play up your best features (a small waist, long legs, etc.)
    • Choose fitted instead of baggy t-shirts.
    • Learn the art of the half-tuck for shirts.

If you have more tips for finding flattering clothes, I’d love to hear them in the comments!

Tip #2 – Keep An Eye On Style Trends

If you want to know how to not dress frumpy, then keep your eye on style trends.

Each season, designers present the modern woman with an astonishing array of new trends.

While researching a post about fall 2019 trends, I read about feathers, Renaissance blouses, puffer jackets, long coats, and more. However, it’s important to keep this simple principle in mind…

Not every fashion trend can be worn modestly or femininely.

For example, fashion designers have been pushing women to wear masculine business suits, complete with dress shirt, blazer, and pants. Some designers even include menswear ties.

Personally, I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing these suits/ties because I think they don’t look feminine. These outfits might cover my body modestly, but they wouldn’t embrace my God-given role as a woman.

In addition, some trends are designed to look edgy, rebellious, or overtly sexual. As Christian women, we want to avoid such trends.

However, many trends can be worn modestly. Often, certain colors or patterns take center stage for a season. Fall 2019 has a lot of golds, yellows, plaid, and dark florals.

These trends can easily be worn in a modest way. Because modest fashion brands watch trends, too, they often have on-point pieces as well.

If your budget is tight, you can even find new pieces at your local thrift store.

Tip #3 – Wear Cute Shoes

Details matter, darling. An adorable, flattering outfit paired with worn out flip-flops is just not good enough.

And don’t get me started on the homeschooler jean-skirt-with-sneakers look.

Two words- NO WAY. (I was a homeschooler, so I can say that!) Sneakers are for the gym. End of story.

If you watch shoe trends, you’ll notice that there are 2 main categories of shoes—classic and trendy.

Some examples of classic shoes are basic pumps, riding style boots, and ballet flats.

More trendy options would include mules, Toms, Birkenstocks, ankle booties, etc.

When you are shoe shopping, ask yourself, “How long do I want to wear this shoe for?” If you just want shoes for one or two seasons, buy cheap, on-trend ones.

But, if you want shoes for 2+ years, choose a classic shape and color that won’t scream, “Made in 2017!”

Shockingly, my mom and sister and I have found a lot of cute, affordable shoes at Walmart.

A few summers ago, we bought multiple pairs of cloth black lace-up flats and wore them to death. (There might still be a pair kicking around). They were $3-7 and worth every penny.

This summer, I splurged and spent about $60 on Lucky Brand leather sandals (50% off) in a classic shape.

I’m planning to wear them for 2-3 years, and they are holding up well so far!

And they pair beautifully with almost any outfit- casual or dressy.

Tip #4 – Don’t Spend Too Much On One-Season Items

Wearing cute shoes is one of the tips for not dressing frumpy

For both on-point shoes and clothes, keep your budget in mind. Ask yourself these questions… How long are you going to wear this item for?

How long is this item going to be in style? Try to shop sales and clearance as much as possible for trendy items. Then, enjoy those items to the fullest.

Wear them every chance you get, because next year is going to be too late.

If you don’t spend too much on trendy pieces, you won’t feel so bad next year when you have to say goodbye to those items.

Tip #5 Curate Your Closet Periodically

    curate your closet

Maybe it’s because I’m a type A personality or something, but I LOVE curating my closet. Periodically, I go through my closet and ask some of the following questions:

    • Is this getting ratty or faded?
    • Does this actually look good on me? (I know, this relates to point #1)
    • Is this out of style yet?
    • Have I worn this or been able to figure out an outfit with it?

If alarm bells go off for 1 or more of these questions, I will most likely toss it in a pile for donation. Life is too short to wear clothes you don’t like.

And it’s definitely too short to keep clothes that don’t go with anything else in your wardrobe!

How do you avoid looking frumpy in your everyday fashion? And which of these tips was your favorite? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

  • How To Dress Modestly In The Summer

How To Dress Modestly In The Summer

Summer is in full swing and the temperatures are up! It can be really challenging to stay cool and still be modest. Aqeelah from Fashion Breed has a new video with some really valuable tips for how to dress modestly in the summer.

    Video Transcription

Hey guys welcome back to my channel. Yay! So today is the first official video for Cover Girl, but before I get started I just wanted to say thank you so much for your amazing response to the first video.

So for today’s video, I actually had something else planned at first, but then one of my amazing readers requested that I do a video on how to dress modestly in the summer heat without perspiring too much and you know without wearing too many layers and all that.

I have mentioned in my previous video that I am someone that does perspire a lot and that’s probably the toughest part about starting to cover up and dress modestly is that I just felt so claustrophobic.

I would put on clothing and would want to like take everything off and it would just be way too much. So, over the years I have mastered ways to kind of get myself around that.

If you want to know how to beat the heat, keep watching. Okay, so before I go into the must have items that you need in your wardrobe for summer or for heat, I want to share the two main principles of personal styling.

The first one is proportion. Proportion has everything from understanding the proportions of the garments you’re wearing to understanding the proportions of your body.

It’s very important when you’re choosing any outfits to know your body and know what’s flattering for you. So, when I talk about the proportions of the clothing what I’m essentially saying is you want to balance skinnier items with more loose and flowing items.

This all depends on the part of your body that you want to cover. When I say skinny items, I don’t necessarily mean that it needs to be super slim fitting.

It just needs to be more fitted that the other part, if that makes sense. If you’re going to be going for like a kimono or a loose and flowing top then I would say you go for skinny legged jeans.

It seems obvious, but so many people still get this wrong. The fit is everything.

So we’re going to be discussing proportions a little bit later while I’m going to show you how I like to mix and match some of my outfits and then I’ll share some of my other outfit posts as well as examples to show you how I’ve incorporated that into my looks on my blog and my daily life.

Principle number two – wear the correct under garments. A lot of women think that if they’re covering up, nobody is going to see my undies – I’m covering up.

But it actually does make a huge difference because essentially covering up in the heat has everything to do with smart and convenient layering. So you need to get the bottom layer on before you can build up on top.

Another thing you want to factor in when you are picking out your undergarments, is to try and opt for breathable fabrics like cotton and natural fibers because that’s going to keep that bottom layer as breathable and airy and flowy as possible.

The way that we’re going to do this is I’m going to take you through different levels of heat or temperature that you would have on a summer’s day. So for example, the same way that Nandos has extra hot, mild, and then lemon and herb, we’re going to have extra hot, mild, and lemon and herb day.

I’m going to show you how I would style for each of those days. We’re gonna start from the hottest and end off with the coolest. So, we’re going to start off with the warmest weather because that’s the toughest to dress for and then we’re going to end off with the cooler weather.

When the weather is scorching hot there is only one way to go. Dresses, dresses, dresses and more dresses. This is something you need to invest in for summer because the best part of wearing a dress is that when you put it on you’re already dressed.

You literally just need to add accessories if that’s your vibe, put on your shoes and you’re out the door. So, not only is it going to keep you cool, but it’s also going to save you time.

Some of my favorites include this blue and white one over here that I got in Thailand. Then, I’ve also got a just little orange gypsy. Then, of course, super on trend right now is to wear your strappy dress with a cute little tee underneath.

Then finally, what I would say is my signature dress in summer is the caftan. It’s got this like bad connotation with it of women cleaning their house in it, being pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen, frying the samosas.

It’s just not always had a cute action or association with it. Personally, I find it so beautiful. I think it’s incredibly regal.

My mom goes to Micker at least once or twice a year and she always brings me at least 2 every single time. I style my caftan really with purpose.

I make sure my hair is down, my make-up is done, my accessories are on point, wearing great flat shoes. Then I really just feel like I cheated the system compared to most other people who have layered whatever else on there and shaved their legs cause y’all don’t know what is going on underneath that thing.

Moving along to temperature number 2, which is sort of moderate heat maybe with a bit of breeze. For that level of heat I really love to pair slim fit tops with looser bottoms.

So those looser bottoms can be a pair of boyfriend jeans, a pair of culottes, and of course my very voluminous Jindal skirts that’s kind of my signature. I think I have about seven of them. I also get my mom to make them for me in every single color.

I even got married in one because it’s just my favorite favorite favorite look of all time. I wear them with sneakers I wear it formally with heels to weddings or whatever else.

I just wear it whenever I want to, however I want to. I just feel so elegant and so vintage and classy whenever I wear it. So, it’s really my favorite look and it’s just always such a hit.

Okay, moving along, I will actually wear a crop top believe it or not with my culottes, with my jindal skirt and then I’ll put a body suit underneath it – like one of those little tank body suits.

They have like this sliver of skin, but not skin because your body suit or even your base is sticking out underneath it and then it gives that little divide. You can even wear very boxy top and boxy bottoms or loose bottoms so that little sliver where your body is “showing” but not showing really gives an interesting proportion to that overall look.

This particular heat level I like to keep it loose and flowing at the bottom and then a little bit more fitted on top. So then the last level of heat which is going to be your cooler weather that’s not quite cold, but it’s a nice refreshing temperature, this is the one where you really have free reign and probably a lot more to play around with because of course you can wear more layers.

So in this particular kind of weather I like to opt for my skinny jeans and then a longer length top or statement kimono. It sounds like the simplest thing to do, you know, you just throw on some jeans and something that’s going to go over it and cover your butt.

Related Content: 4 Cute Outfits For Hot Weather To Copy This Summer

But there is actually more to it. So again I’m going to go back to proportion. In my opinion if you are wearing some skinny jeans and you want to cover up for the top, you’re either going to wear a shorter top that’s just going to cover your butt or you’re going to wear something longer from the knee down.

The second you hit that level between where your butt ends and your knee begins, and you’re kind of in the middle that’s when you’re going to be Frumpy McFrump Pants, and nobody wants to be her.

So if you want to cover more than just your back, by all means do it, but then cover with purpose. Which means cover all the way down to your knee and then have your skinny jeans showing from the knee down.

Lastly, my favorite look to pull off in cooler weather, but still moderately warm weather is to wear a super long statement kimono with my skinny jeans and what I like to call the conservative vest.

So what I mean by conservative vest is one like this where it is sleeveless, the neck is quite high, and it’s not too tight fitting. I love that the sleeves are sort of cut over here so when I wear my kimono over it, it’s like even if it flies open a bit it doesn’t show too much skin.

I love longer length kimonos. I get so many compliments, I get so many Instagram likes when I wear them. I think when it’s longer length, it also just gives a super striking finish overall to your look, which is very different to your regular just over the bum kimono.

So if you can get one of these custom made I highly recommend it. It is so amazing. It keeps you cool, you look great. What I did last summer was I actually took one of the caftans that I have, they come from Micker, and I split it down the middle, then just had my mom hem it down the center.

Right now it’s the kimono I love the most. Everyone always asks me about it and it’s literally the easiest thing ever. So that’s it from me for today guys, I hope you enjoyed this video and I really hope that you learned something.

Women all over the world choose modesty. I spent the last few weeks asking women of all different faiths the following question:

“How do you define modesty in your religion?”

Today you’re going to read 22 responses that I gathered from women that belong to the following religions: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Christianity, Mennonite, Islam, Hinduism and Orthodox Judaism.

Since this article is long, I’ve provided you a table of contents. Clicking on one of the links will take you to that part of the article.

    1. Emily Inman – Latter-Day Saints

Emily Inman tells us how Latter-Day Saints define modesty

Everyone defines modesty differently. I believe modesty is an attitude, a way of thinking. It’s showing your body respect.

I don’t think modesty means you can/cannot wear particular pieces of clothing; I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to be modest.

If you feel comfortable and are respecting yourself, the choice is yours.

You can easily make an immodest piece modest by adding a simple layer underneath or on top. As long as you are attracting the appropriate kind of attention, you must be doing something right.

    Modesty is always beautiful.

    2. Liz Oreilly – Latter-Day Saints

    Liz Oreilly

The way I like to dress is to make sure I cover my knees, so my skirts/dresses are usually 4” or more below my knee, this way I feel like I can move around and never worry if I bend over and my G’s show in the back of my leg etc.

I also like my shorts to fit 1-2 inches below my knees so when I sit they never pass my knees.

I don’t like my pants to fit tight/revealing so I don’t wear leggings or tight jeans. I like them to fit loose. I like my sleeves on my arms to be covering well past my shoulders, I don’t like the cap sleeves.

I like my collars to be just around my collar bone so if I bend over, or my kids pull on my shirt, they won’t show much.

When I explain the way I like clothes, through text, many people think it’s extreme, but when you see the way I dress it’s very pretty and fashionable.

I’m constantly receiving compliments from strangers and friends alike. To be very well covered doesn’t have to be ugly or suffocating.

I also make some of my own clothes and alter others I buy in thrift stores.

Many people have asked me where I buy clothes because they can never find anything “like that”.

It’s sad, I wish there were more options for people that want to dress more covered up, but many ladies just kind of go “oh well” and wear what they can.

    3. Stephanie Ann Torres – Latter-Day Saints

    Stephanie Ann Torres

I pretty much follow the guidelines from For the Strength of Youth for myself and my children.

I try to wear clothing appropriate for my garments to keep them sacred and encourage my children (who are small) to prepare themselves to make their own covenants if they choose.

I also strongly believe that modesty is also an attitude.

    4. Megan Arrott – Latter-Day Saints

    Megan Arrott

Nothing too tight! Even though it might be long enough a lot of time skirts and dresses fit way to tight and reveal a lot more than it should! Also, no cleavage.

    5. Rebekah Webb Norman – Latter-Day Saints

    Rebekah Webb

When I received my endowments, we spoke about modesty in the temple that day. I was told that if a clothing item didn’t cover a garment, it wasn’t considered modest, the rest is up to personal interpretation based on prayer and comfort.

I’ve grown to understand that more over time as I’ve learned to dress myself with garments. Part of my modesty is making sure my garments are covered.

Covering my garments is important because they’re sacred symbols of promises I made to my Heavenly Father in the temple.

In our religion, they’re more of an inward expression to remind us everyday of those promises. You learn how to get creative with layering clothes and adding accessories.

It is a lot of fun exploring new trends and looks to fit your needs. Modesty to me is empowering, beautiful and freeing!

    6. Kendra Tierney – Catholic

Kendra Tierney tells us how Catholics define modesty

The way I see it, Catholic modesty is more nuanced than any rules about fingers from the throat and whatnot. As a Catholic, I want to be attractive to people.

That means having a smile, and being kind, and dressing in a way that is attractive, rather than provocative or attention-grabbing.

My personal goal is to dress appropriately for my age, activity, personal style, and state of life, and not in a way that’s going to direct attention to my body rather than my . . . self.

That’s what I’m trying to teach my kids, too. Modesty isn’t about rules, it’s about how I want people to react to me and remember me.

    7. Carolyn Shields – Catholic

    Carolyn Shields

I’ve always believed that women are the pinnacle of creation, but if we look to how God revealed His masterpiece to the world, he did so gradually, accompanied by a rising crescendo.

Equating this to modesty, a woman shouldn’t bare her soul or her body to the world all at once. She must be inviting and alluring, and one of the easiest ways of mirroring the exposition of her soul to the exposition of her creation is simply through her clothing!

God didn’t reveal woman all at once; likewise, we shouldn’t reveal ourselves in one glance. Wearing modest clothing is a way of saying “I’m so much more, and I invite you closer.”

And according to the Catechism, this attraction, which is aided by modesty put into practice, “protects the mystery of persons and their love.

It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled…”

To put it simply, there’s so much that a woman can reveal, whether that’s through her body, actions, image, or soul…modesty is a means to help both men and women be directed toward the Eternal Beauty that we are created in.

When it comes to the particulars of clothing, I think there’s two things here: one, some nice common sense. How does a woman naturally react when wind picks up her skirt?

She holds it down. Why might a woman blush if she’s caught in her bra before an elder? Because something isn’t right.

Second, what one woman considers modest, another might have a different opinion, and I think that’s fine.

There’s other factors involved here, like context, location, fitting, age, and even perhaps old wounds and insecurities, which all vary amongst women.

Do I wear leggings? Yeah…do I think they are immodest? Well in what context? In what setting? For who? A fifteen year old?

Or a woman in her late twenties? How tight are they? Do you feel beautiful in them? Who are you with?

We can’t reduce the issue of modesty to some kind of blanket approach, just like we can’t have some kind of mathematical formula for a true, authentic relationship.

Just like we can’t for how to be holy. Yes, there’s so many beautiful avenues to guide us, but the heart is a complex matter, and that’s where our actions (what we wear, how we dress) should stem.

If we always start there, in light of the inherent dignity and worth women have, then maybe we can dress accordingly.

    8. Becca Gaston – Christianity

Becca Gaston tells us how Christians define modesty

The Bible says in 1 Timothy 2:9-10 “likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

The Bible doesn’t give us the exact measurements of our dress, or what type of shirt to wear but gives us guidelines on how to not draw sexual attention to ourselves.

Modesty is an attitude of humility. Not causing another person to stumble by what we are wearing.

It’s not particularly about covering up our bodies because we are wanting to hide ourselves, it’s more about being humble, serving others and revealing our own dignity.

    9. Hannah Bowers – Christianity

    Hannah Bowers

Since marrying my husband, I’ve deferred to him for what the standard for modesty look like in our home. He was pretty clear from the get go: “Modest” clothing goes hand-in-hand with a modest heart.

So, when it comes to what I wear, he encourages me to examine my motivation behind the outfit and take into account the setting.

While this isn’t grounds to run around with my belly bare, it has revealed how stuck I was on the “rules” of modesty and daily teaches me more about the grace Christ extends to us.

    10. Meghan Weyerbacher – Christianity

    Meghan Weyerbacher

Not everyone knows our beliefs and values. We are a walking billboard for these things. Honoring our bodies in a healthy way by choosing to adorn ourselves in apparel that bring attention to our care, consideration and creativity — is honorable.

Modesty coupled with humility breeds character. And today, these are both uncommon.

One doesn’t need to compromise their convictions to stand out. It will automatically follow as life is lived from this place of regard.

We needn’t worry how our modest lifestyle is reciprocated if we are staying true to who we are.

    11. Angela Legg – Christianity

I believe modesty begins in the mind. Any Christian woman should be seeking to direct eyes and minds upwards to God – not toward herself.

Her speech, her clothing, and her behavior should all reflect a spirit of being appropriate as a woman who professes godliness.

This mindset will not seek to expose her own body to others, instead, it willingly covers that which God has called “nakedness”.

Basically, modesty is an obedient state of mind that is reflected in the daily choices we make in our lives: including, but not limited to how we dress.

    12. Elyse Fitzpatrick – Christianity

    Elyse Fitzpatrick

Elyse Fitzpatrick, the author of Give them Grace: Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus

What is modesty? Is it the length of your skirt or the cut of your blouse? Modesty isn’t less than that, but it certainly is much more.

Modesty has to do with humility, with the determination not to show-off, not to seek to prove that one can “pull off” a certain look, or have the power to cause others to look at you. It’s love of neighbor.

Sure, it is love of the purity of the men who will see you, but it’s also love for the women who will look at you and either feel badly about themselves or envy you.

Modesty means that you don’t have anything to prove, one way or another, by what you wear. It means that you dress in such a way that it makes it easy for others around you to love the Lord and love you.

It means that you’re resting in what Jesus has done for you. It’s the heart that Jesus had when he refused to show off by making stones into bread.

Could he have done it? Sure. But he didn’t need to. It’s in that way that Jesus was the most modest person who ever lived.

And if you’re trusting him his record of perfect modesty is yours. So, rest in his work and love your neighbor for him.

    13. Katie Evans – Christianity

    Katie Evans

Modesty in the Christian culture primarily centers around the condition of your heart, whether it be centered around the will of the Lord or not, how you clothe yourself will reflect your heart.

This may be subsequent of a personal conviction or strong belief that you wish portray in a certain standard of appearance.

As a Jesus-following Christian, my belief is that what you wear should draw attention to your face, and no other part of your body.

How you clothe yourself should directly reflect the condition of your heart and love for the Lord, not physical attention.

    14. Lynette Yoder – Mennonite

Lynette Yoder tells us how modesty is defined in the Mennonite religion

As a Christian woman I believe it is very important to understand the meaning of modesty.

One of the main scriptures in the Bible that refers to Modesty is this – “likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,” ‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭2:9‬ ‭ESV‬.

I don’t think Paul is saying we can’t dress attractively! But I believe that modesty first needs to come from our heart.

We need to understand the importance of keeping our bodies covered. If I don’t have a conviction about it, it will likely show up in the way I dress.

So I ask myself these questions. What are my motives? Am I dressing to bring attention to my body? Why do I want to wear certain things?

What do people see when they look at me? Can they see Christ in me?!

    15. Ayeina – Islam

Modesty in Islam is not just about the outlook, modesty is in your heart, in your dress, in your words, in your gaze, in your gait!

Which is why modesty in Islam is not only confined to women but also extends to men. Modesty in gaze has been ordained in the Qur’an upon men before women.

Modesty is a choice for those who want to submit. For those who want more spiritual experience and connection with their Lord.

The definition of it can differ for different Muslims. Some feel modest in full clothes. Some feel modest in simpler clothes. Some feel modest in hijabs while some feel modest in niqabs.

Most people choose such modest lifestyle. A piece of fabric doesn’t define them but it becomes an important part of their identity.

    16. Fusionista – Islam

Islam promotes modesty in clothing and in ever walk of life. About clothing, you have to wear something that covers your whole body.

You are not allowed to wear exposing clothes like shorts, mini skirts etc. This applied for both men and  women. However, men can have their trousers (which are called shalwar in Islam) a little bit above their toes.

Women have to cover their head as well. They can use a dupatta or a scarf. However, there is no restriction in the type of cloth.

They are free to wear embroidered clothes or any simple clothes keeping in mind that it’s not exposing. Because Islam promotes MODESTY!

    17. Zahra Said – Islam

    Zahra Said

Modesty is a lifestyle choice. It isn’t just how a person dresses, but it is also how they interact with the world around them.

A person can be modest in dress, but they can still be immodest in their actions. Modesty is unique, and it is being fearless in the sense, no matter what people say you will stay true to yourself.

    18. Sonu Bohra – Hinduism

Sonu Bohra tells us how modesty is defined in Hinduism

To me modesty is a state of mind that translates into action. Of course, traditionally dressing modestly means covering yourself but with a constantly evolving state of mind; to me modesty means wearing something you relate to and feel one.

Fully clothed or in shorts, it doesn’t matter as long as your true to yourself.

    19. Supriya Kachroo – Hinduism

    Supriya Kachroo

Hinduism is the world’s 3rd largest religion with over 1 billion followers. When it comes to covering the beautiful human body, I find the Hindu attires extremely stylish and comfortable.

One example is a saree, which is a long sheet of cloth, draped over a crop top or a blouse.

A few other traditional clothing items include lehenga-choli and salwar-suit. India has multitudes of religions, customs, traditions, and states.

Because of this, you will find changes in terms of clothing and the way the people adorn it on themselves.

In ancient times, women used to enjoy free and higher status in the society. Over time, rules and regulations were made to protect the dignity of women, which changed their true course and led to boundaries.

Clothes which cover most of the body are considered good. A girl wearing a saree with a blouse showing her navel and back is considered modest, whereas another girl wearing a crop top over a pair of jeans is considered bold.

Someone has rightly said that- ‘How a woman is dressed (or not dressed) has no effect on a wise man’s mind’.

    20. Rashi Gaur – Hinduism

    Rashi Gaur

Modesty is a relative term. Each one of us has different measures and parameters to define this term.

But when it comes to clothing, it opens to a vast range of fashion revolution that’s prevailing in societies believing in modest clothing.

I personally believe modesty can be as fashionable and stylish as any other trend.

Long sleeves, maxi lengths, scarves and hijaabs in beautiful prints and textures; all these can be equally stylish and modest, at the same time.

Today, retailers are full of amazing options in this category. It again depends on the way how one styles their look.

    21. Malky Weichbrod – Orthodox Judaism

Malky Weichbrod tells us how modesty is defined in Orthodox Judaism

I have always felt that dressing Modestly means dressing in a way that’s more covered-up but not at all uninteresting.

I feel like clothes should make us feel like our best selves and outfits should have personality- they should celebrate the wearer.

For example, I personally love pieces that reflect my passion for the Seventies an era of velvet, corduroy, glittery knitwear and pleated midi skirts.

But that’s just me- it’s whatever vibe speaks to the wearer and makes them feel their best self. In my opinion the word modesty and the modest-dress phenomenon that is thankfully becoming such a huge part of fashion today are vastly different.

Dressing modestly doesn’t mean having to wear quiet clothes that draw attention away from the wearer- on the contrary dressing modestly should draw attention but in a positive way.

So wear red or purple or whatever beautiful color gets you going- if you prefer a classic palette that’s fabulous too just don’t feel restricted to certain colors or patterns in order to fade into the background- wear your modesty loud and proud.

    22. Rachelle Yadegar – Orthodox Judaism

    Rachelle Yadegar

As Jewish women we are compared to jewels. When you have a very rare and expensive jewel, you keep its beauty hidden in order to keep its value.

That’s why I think dressing modestly is so beautiful. Modestly is not only in clothing, it’s a lifestyle. It’s being modest in everything you do.

Just like Princess Diana, Jacklyn Kennedy and Kate Middleton, are all icons known for beauty and grace.

    Conclusion

As you can tell, modesty is important to women in all of the major world religions. If you belong to a religion that isn’t included in this post and you dress modestly, I’d love to hear in the comments how you define modesty.

    Popular modest clothing brands question

    What is considered modest clothing?

What’s considered modest is different to some people and certain religions. The main goal with modest clothing is to not show a lot of skin. Examples of this are to not show shoulders, cleavage, or any leg above the knee.

As I find more modest clothing websites, I’ll add them to this list. Which modest brands have you shopped from?
